Maggie O'Brien's Owner Pat McVey Killed in I-55 Shooting

The owner of Maggie O'Brien's Restaurant & Irish Pub was shot dead in his car on Wednesday afternoon.

Pat McVey, who ran the popular downtown establishment with his younger brother, was found in the vehicle in the southbound lane of Interstate 55 near Loughborough Avenue, authorities say.

Shortly before 6 p.m., Missouri Department of Transportation worker spotted the car parked on the shoulder and stopped to investigate. Police say McVey had been shot at about 2:30 p.m. He was dead when they arrived.

The shooter is unknown, police say.

A St. Louis native, McVey had been at Maggie's more than three decades, working under the original owner before eventually taking over with younger brother Eddie McVey. The sprawling sports bar and restaurant is a favorite of Blues and Cards fans.

The bar suffered an earlier tragedy in 2009 when a bartender was killed in a robbery that was planned with the help of another employee.
