Marvin Rice: Ex-Sheriff's Deputy Accused of Murderous Rampage

A former sheriff's deputy turned jailer stands accused of killing his ex-wife and her boyfriend over the weekend and then leading police on a high-speed chase that ended in a shootout at a swank hotel Jefferson City hotel.

The chaos began around 6:30 p.m. Saturday in southeastern Missouri when Marvin Rice, 44, burst into his ex-wife's home in the town of Salem and demanded custody of their two-year-old son. Following an argument, Rice pulled out a gun, according to reports, and shot to death 32-year-old Annette Durham and her boyfriend, Steven Strotkamp, 39.

Rice, a former Dent County Sheriff's Deputy who currently works as a correction's officer, then fled the scene with his toddler son, dropping the boy with his current wife before leading police on a high-speed chase that would reach speeds of over 100 mph and run for nearly 70 miles.

Rice was entering Jefferson City when police threw a spike strip in front of his vehicle, stopping his car near the Capitol Plaza Hotel. He then ran into the hotel, where hundreds of people were gathered in a ballroom for a Christmas party. Rice and police then exchanged gunfire inside the lobby. He sustained at least two bullets in the shootout. No one else was injured.

He is currently listed in fair condition at a Columbia hospital.
