Police in the small town of Red Bud, Illinois, say that 23-year-old Mateo Gomez-Rosete ran up beside a 51-year-old female marathon runner as the woman was training around midnight Wednesday.
Gomez-Rosete is accused of then pushing the woman into a bean field where he allegedly beat and raped her. The victim was finally able to get away from the suspect and run to a nearby foundry where employees were working an overnight shift.
Gomez-Rosete was picked up in the parking lot of a Dairy Queen not far from the crime scene. Authorities say the suspect had alcohol on his breath.
KMOX reports that Gomez-Rosete had worked at a Red Bud restaurant called Tequila's for about a month before being fired a few days before the reported rape. The radio station adds that Gomez-Rosete admitted to authorities that he's in the U.S. illegally, having received a bogus residency card from a friend.
