Spearheaded by University City resident Christina "Steenz" Stewart, the demonstration is intended to offer comfort and encourage self-care to those who are feeling angst over Tuesday's presidential election, which saw Donald Trump best Hillary Clinton. Stewart and a few of her friends will be handing out free buttons and a Take Comfort/Take Care zine filled with donated artwork, tips for self-care and words of encouragement.
The demonstration will take place from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the corner of South Meramec and Forsyth Boulevard, then progress to the corner of Leland Avenue and Delmar Boulevard from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Those who wish to come are welcome to bring along whatever gives them joy, such as flowers and candy to hand out, or posters with words with positive messages.
"I know a lot of people wanted to do marches and anti-Drumpf rallies and that's all well and good. But not everyone has the emotional fortitude to do it," Stewart, a library technician at St. Louis Public Library, explained in an email. "I personally fear for my safety 24/7 and being at a rally that could POSSIBLY incite violence was something I knew I wouldn't be able to handle.
"But there are also a lot of people who are sad. And depressed. And hopeless. And that's okay. It's OK to feel 'not OK.' And I felt like doing this demonstration would be a good way to let people know that they're not alone. The zines especially a great method of self care."
