RFT Softball: Comeback Spoiled in Extra Innings

The addition of ace pitcher and RFT circulation manager Kevin Powers wasn't enough to ensure victory last night in a tightly contested game versus Chevy's Fresh Mex.

Powers -- whose prowess in beer-related sports is comparable to Bo Jackson's onetime dominance of real athletics -- missed the first three games of the season to conclude his Monday-night dart league campaign. The postponed start had little to no adverse effect on his pitching. Powers struck out the side in the fifth inning and recorded a whopping seven Ks over nine innings.

His efforts, however, were not enough to overcome RFT's inconsistent play. Things looked promising early on for the good guys when RFT slugger Tom "Socks" Kavanaugh launched a two-run homer over the center-field fence. Chevy's would rally in the middle frames to go up 7-2 before RFT plated six runs in the sixth inning to reclaim the lead 8-7.

Chevy's tied it up in the bottom of the seventh, forcing the contest into extra innings. The marathon ended unceremoniously (for us) in the bottom of the ninth when Chevy's scored on a walk-off RBI to win 9-8.

Arguably the scariest moment of the game came in the eighth when Kim Cook suffered a broken pinky after going down hard while trying to beat a throw to first base. Even more frightening than the spill, perhaps, was Cook's chalk- and dust-streaked face, a combination of geisha doll and Bride of Frankenstein. If only the rest of RFT could look so intimidating.
