Run and Bare It

Today at 9 a.m. the Colon Cancer Alliance encourages everyone to grab the kids, grab the dog, but leave the pants at home for the Undy 5000 race for life. The Undy 5000 is a family-friendly run to raise awareness of this rarely discussed disease, which is actually one of the most preventable cancers around. Participants are free to get creative with their underwear-themed outfits, and all runners receive a pair of commemorative boxer shorts for joining in the battle. Leashed, boxer-sporting under-dogs can join in the run, and a giant, walk-through inflatable colon will be on the premises, so you can see firsthand what normal colon tissue looks like and how an unremoved polyp can transform into cancer. Race-day registration for the 5K adult and 5K youth races costs $40 and $35, respectively, while registration for the all-ages 1K fun run is just $30. Children ages five and younger can also get in the action and race for free. The meet-up point is the Upper Muny parking lot in Forest Park.
