Homicide for the Holidays

Say, are you sick of your family yet? After a long day of eating together and re-heating all those long-buried tensions, maybe you've got mayhem on the mind? Not to worry, that's perfectly normal. But rather than take the carving knife to the wrong old bird, perhaps you should get out of the house and indulge your yen for violence in a more abstract fashion. Tonight at 7 p.m. at Meshuggah Coffee House (6269 Delmar Boulevard, University City; 314-726-5662) the Noir at the Bar reading series hosts a murderer's row of authors who specialize in writing about murderers and rows, as well as other unsavory treats. Liam Jose, the editor of Crime Factory, is coming all the way from Melbourne, Australia to read, while Kevin Lynn Helmick (author of Driving Alone) makes the trip from Chicago, and CJ Edwards (Uncle B's Drive-In Fiction) is in from Indiana. And that's in addition to series organizer Jedidiah Ayres, whose collection A Fuckload of Shorts was just published. All authors will be selling books, and the second installment of the Noir at the Bar anthology will be also be sold -- it's regularly available at Subterranean Books, which is just a few doors down. Admission is free, but bring money for beers and books.
