All genre films have certain conventions associated with them, but slasher films in particular have a very specific set of clichés that endear them to fans. Movies like Halloween and Friday the 13th set the standard for what was to become one of the slasher's most time-honored traditions, "the last girl" — the sole survivor of a group of hacked-up teenagers who takes down the killer in the final reel. Allison Moore's dark (red) comedy Slasher is the story of Sheena, a down-on-her-luck waitress who catches a break when cast as the last girl in a slasher movie. Trouble is, her mom is a staunch feminist who will stop at nothing to prevent female debasement wherever it takes place — even if her daughter is the female and the debasement is fictional. HotCity Theatre cuts loose with Slasher at 8 p.m. Thursday and Friday, 3 and 8 p.m. Saturday and 7 p.m. Sunday (December 3 through 18) at the Kranzberg Arts Center (501 North Grand Boulevard; 314-289-4063 or www.hotcitytheatre.org).
