In 1933, with synchronized sound still in its infancy, Warner Brothers Pictures released the film 42nd Street, the landmark Hollywood musical that saved the studio from bankruptcy, thanks to the songwriting of Harry Warren and Al Dubin and the surrealist, kaleidoscopic choreography of Busby Berkeley. 42nd Street was nominated for Best Picture and Best Sound Recording, and the following year, the Academy introduced the category Best Original Song. Tonight, Charis, the lesbian chorus, presents Charis Does Oscar, a tribute to Academy Award-nominated and -winning songs, reaching all the way back to 42nd Street and on to films such as The Little Mermaid, Evita and The Color Purple. The music begins at 7:30 p.m. at the Missouri History Museum (Lindell Boulevard and DeBaliviere Avenue), and tickets are $15 to $18.
