Picture two women in the basement kitchen of a manor house. One is the older experienced cook, the other is a neophyte who wants to learn a trade. Here in an Argentinean kitchen, the two women must butcher hundreds of animals in precise, increasingly exotic ways to satisfy the master of the house’s appetite for the finer things in life. The simple set up of Cooking with Elisa becomes a prism through which playwright Lucía Laragione examines the dynamics of the master-and-servant relationship and the larger machinations of power politics. Upstream Theater presents the American premiere of Cooking with Elisa at 8 p.m. Thursday through Saturday (January 7 through 22), 7 p.m. Sunday (January 9 and 16) and 3 p.m. Sunday, January 23, at the Kranzberg Arts Center (501 North Grand Boulevard; 314-863-4949 or www.upstreamtheater.com).
