Pit master extraordinaire Mike Mills of 17th Street Bar & Grill (1711 West Highway 50, O'Fallon; 618-622-1717 or www.17thstreetbarbecue.com) will be cooking at the famed James Beard House in New York City on July 15.

The dinners at the Beard House are hosted monthly by the James Beard Foundation to continue Beard's philosophy of combining food and community. The dinners offer the opportunity for acclaimed chefs to show their skills in New York City, while the $170 meal ticket provides funds for culinary scholarships.

Mills' book, Peace, Love and Barbecue, co-authored with his daughter Amy Mills-Tunnicliffe, was nominated for a 2006 Beard Award. Mills-Tunnicliffe will be cooking with her father at the James Beard House.

Although not as prestigious, Mills' recent appearance on Food Network probably reached more people than his Beard House dinner. Iron Chef Michael Symon chose Mills' ribs for the "Smokey" episode of the show The Best Thing I Ever Ate. It first aired in early June.
