We should have seen this coming, honestly. Earlier this year, the Flaming Lips released an EP on a flash drive embedded in a life size gummy human skull. The band even hand-delivered a few to St. Louis. Then, a couple weeks ago, the Lips released a six-hour song, which you can stream if you've got a second or 21,600 -- it's worth noting that they raised $20,000 for the Humane Society in the process. So why not go ahead and record a 24-hour song, put it on a hard drive and embed it in a human skull?
That, of course, is exactly what the Flaming Lips are doing -- the song comes out on Halloween this year and the special human skull deluxe edition has a run of five copies. They cost $5,000 and are all already sold out, naturally. Wayne Coyne, apparently seeking to dial back the creepy, explained to MTV's O Music Awards blog, "Nothing we're doing is bizarre or illegal. There's a place in town [Oklahoma City] that's called Skulls Unlimited that's ben here for almost as long as the Flaming Lips have been here, and it sells human skulls. Heads come into this place and they have these flesh-eating beetles -- I would have tweeted a picture of it, but they don't allow it -- [they] literally eat every molecule of flesh off of these things and you'll end up with a human skull".
