What is it about Nordic nations that triggers innovative pop music? Must be something in the ice — or icing, in the case of Cake on Cake. Sweden's latest export is actually a one-art-student orchestra conducted by Helena Sundin that's composed of (deep breath) marimba, five different flutes, claves, triangle, piano, eggs, maracas, guitar, mandolin, electronics, keyboards and all things percussive. As if these weren't enough, the conductor then inserts her multi-tiered voice among the instruments and harmonizes against herself once, twice, three times over. With her lyrics as densely sweet as condensed milk and powdered sugar, Sundin is as luscious and involved as a layer-Cake on Cake.
