It'll be a crime if Earl Greyhound — a New York power trio that updates Southern rock's swagger with progressive rock's sharp corners — doesn't break out sometime soon. Singer and guitarist Matt Whyte is tall, blond and riff-happy enough to be mistaken for a long-lost Allman brother, but the band's rhythm section doesn't let him fade into a bluesy fog. "S.O.S.," the lead track from last year's Soft Targets, begins with a Zeppelin-esque two-chord stomp, takes a break with a hazy middle-eight and finally culminates in the kind of lift-off that the Secret Machines would kill for. And while Targets is solid, Earl Greyhound has been making waves with its live gigs; this free show is your chance to see what all the hype is about.
