Throughout the '90s and early '00s, Blake Schwarzenbach was one of the most prominent voices in the punk/indie world. With his bands Jawbreaker and Jets to Brazil, he cloaked poetic, depressing-as-hell lyrics behind nervy pop hooks. (Whether he's comfortable admitting it or not, the guy arguably invented emo.) Although he's kept a fairly low profile in recent years, Schwarzenbach is back with his newest endeavor, forgetters. To address the elephant in the room: The three-piece, which also features original Against Me! drummer, Kevin Mahon, sounds more Jawbreaker than JTB. But that's not to say Schwarzenbach isn't touching new ground here — and he certainly hasn't lost his edge. On its debut double 7", forgetters offers up sinister, grating guitar wails powered by pulsating rhythms. And believe it or not, after all these years, Schwarzenbach sounds as dejected as ever.
