Jonatha Brooke began her musical life in folk-duo the Story, and by the mid-'90s she was releasing solo albums that placed her clarion, elastic voice in increasingly more modern rock contexts. Her latest, Careful What You Wish For, is a glossy affair, packed with bombastic guitars and some studio wizardry (compliments of co-producer Bob Clearmountain). The title track begins simply, only to unload a karate-chop of big guitar and synth noises. Like a less obtuse Suzanne Vega, Brooke pushes outside of her folk roots to parse the terrors of modern life, from global wars to broken hearts and everything that falls in between.
