The collision between garage rock and junky funk finds an early psychedelic impact in the Amboy Dukes, if not the Wailers. Kid Congo Powers (a.k.a. Brian Tristan) chases the aftershocks with detours, only to score some low-grade Chicano speedballs, old-school Bronx breakbeats and obscure horror-punk seven-inches. (One would expect nothing less from a member of the Cramps, Gun Club and the Bad Seeds.) With current group the Pink Monkey Birds, Congo's 2009 album, Dracula Boots, sounds like the Dirtbombs produced by Spike Jones and featuring vocals by Boris Karloff. It's a great headphone album, if you're into controlled experiments in migraines and/or nihilism. On the other hand, if you're jonesing for a heavy dance groove, twisted guitar fuzz and songs that blur street-corner rants and performance art, the Kid's rare St. Louis date is your kind of party.
