Just on the other side of Dan Lastick's scampering yelp (think Jonathan Richman having a go at primal-scream therapy) and a jittery rhythm section (like the Undertones toning it down a notch), a Chicago pop band called the Saps is waiting to blow through self-imposed layers of snot-cracked irony. Or so it appears on their new album, C'Mon Already — Start a Fire (the title's not serious either), which tempers the snark with some convincing Beach Boy confections, Nuggets-style psych-garage and a little country picking — even if it's on a song about copping a feel at an art-porn flick. They make romantic metaphors out of hospital phobia and fish slipping off hooks, but they mostly make pop-punk for the right reason: for fun. Two Cow Garage and Fertilizer Bomb are also playing this show, which is billed as a "Frederick's Music Lounge Anniversary Show."
