You know, A to Z has a love-hate relationship with Weezer. The band has the capability to write crunchy, catchy pop tunes -- see the strummy single "(If You're Wondering If I Want You To) I Want You To" -- and replicate its best-known tunes; the Blue Album/Pinkerton tour was, by all accounts, fantastic. But then Weezer does things such as put a character from Lost on an album cover (and heck, name the album after him) and unleash other gimmicks such as a band-branded Snuggie -- and it's hard to tell if it's serious or just fucking with us.
And then there's this: Here's Weezer sounding like 1996 on a cover of the State Farm insurance theme song. Let's let that sink in.
That's, well, actually pretty good. But believe it or not, that's not the most mindblowing thing about this ad. Says the band on its website:
It turns out Barry Manilow wrote the song, back when he was just starting out and wrote songs for commercials to pay his bills. Rivers looked over the sheet music and said "this is a great song; we should record the whole thing." So the band went into the studio and had a lot of fun rocking out with Mr. Manilow's tune, hoping he would be proud of the results.
