While tons of excellent bands tour the globe every year, the number of critical darlings is finite. Tapes 'n Tapes may technically fit into the latter category, but the Minneapolis band's brand of demented pop music is accessible enough to appeal to people who don't sit around debating the merits of Lou Reed's Metal Machine Music. In fact, idiosyncratic tracks such as "Insistor," from 2005's The Loon, are as reminiscent of Pavement and the Pixies as they are of, say, the Violent Femmes. "Challenge is for lovers/But when I run my feet hurt," frontman Josh Grier sings during the aforementioned track. We're not sure what it means either, but we can't stop listening.
