Update: Wash U. Dumps Bristol!

Student leaders at Washington University have approved spending thousands of dollars to bring Bristol Palin to St. Louis next month to talk at the school's annual "Sexual Responsibility Week."

Palin will serve as the keynote speaker February 7 and discuss abstinence along with three other panelists. The Student Union Treasury yesterday approved a $20,000 budget for the panel. As school's newspaper Student Life reports this morning, it's unclear how much of that $20,000 will go directly to Palin though she's said to charge $15,000 to $30,000 on the speaker's circuit.

Palin is perhaps most famous for being the pregnant teen at her mother's side during Sarah Palin's run for vice-president in 2008. Last year she renewed her celebutante cache while appearing on the show Dancing With the Stars.

Bristol Palin and her baby-daddy Levi Johnson are no longer together and the 20-year-old is attempting to get full-custody of their two-year-old son, Tripp. According to recent reports, Palin now lives in Phoenix where her reality-show paycheck allowed her to pay cash for a five-bedroom home. Her pricey speaking gigs, one can only imagine, should help her lavishly furnish the new casa.

But is Palin -- a woman who seems to have achieved fame and fortune largely because of her teen pregnancy -- really a good person to discuss abstinence?

That's what many Washington University student are asking.

"One concern I do have is when we do fund someone like Bristol Palin, is what really are we supporting. And to me it's someone who is famous because they got pregnant at 18," Wash. U. freshman Jacob Trunsky, tells Student Life.
