Lure of Federal Money Spurs Improvements on South Grand

St. Louis is fast-tracking a plan to improve the popular South Grand strip of restaurants and shops. This week alderwoman Jennifer Florida (Ward 15) apprised her constituents of a hastily called meeting she attended recently at Mayor Francis Slay's office.

The topic of that meeting: turning the South Grand strip from a "good" to a "great" street. The project is part of East-West Gateway Council of Government's "Great Streets Initiative" that encourages the development of pedestrian-friendly business districts in St. Louis. The plan for South Grand includes lighting improvements and reducing the number of traffic lanes on the street from four lanes to three.

The city and East-West Gateway hope that by beginning work before the end of the year the project could qualify for federal stimulus monies.
