St. Louis Post-Dispatch Ramps Up Its 'Social Networking'

The local daily continues to rejig operations in the wake of significant cost-cutting  (layoffs), and is now hoping to ramp up online traffic (revenues) with a social networking portal a la Facebook and the New York Times' TimesPeople.

Called MySTLToday, the application apparently launched last fall, but the pickings are minimal. I just clicked over to find a video of a pie-eating contest, some head shots of eye doctors and a couple photos of people getting married. Tapped to ratchet up content for the site is a new team of seasoned reporters: Tim Townsend (religion), Tim Barker (technology), Matt Hathaway (metro) and Steve Giegerich.

Giegerich is leaving the St. Louis Public Schools beat to start a timely new area of coverage for the Post: jobs.  

More changes are coming down the pipe as the Post plans to shrink its page size and introduce a new features section (again) in March.

Its corporate parent, Lee Enterprises, this week said it'll be pink-slipping more than ten percent of its workforce during this first quarter of 2009.
