Dining at
Mainlander (8 South Euclid Avenue) is not only a great meal, it's an experience that transports diners to mid-century America, complete with all the period's nostalgic kitsch. But don't let the stylish trappings fool you: owners Gordon Chen and Blake Askew have sunk just as much effort (and likely more) in creating a prix-fixe menu full of flawlessly executed dishes.
RFT Dining Critic Cheryl Baehr loved the main course served the day she went: a char siu-style pork steak. She writes, "The stunningly marbled slab of pork was perfectly charred around the edges, then gilded with a mouthwatering, five-spice-scented glaze that is equal parts Taiwanese barbecue and Maull's-fueled backyard cookout." Almost as delightful were the wok-seared green beans and sweet potato spaetzle mac and cheese the pork was served with.
