From 4 to 7 p.m. on Wednesdays during the growing season, the market outside Schlafly Bottleworks in Maplewood lives up to its promise of putting St. Louisans in touch with their food and its origin. What this market lacks in size, it more than makes up for in quality—be it berries and peaches from Murphy's Orchard, lamb and eggs from Prairie Grass Farms, antibiotic- and hormone-free beef and pork from Hinkebein Family Farm or cheeses from Goatsbeard Farm. It doesn't hurt that the market's right outside the Bottleworks—there's nothing like sipping a pale ale while pondering whether to bring home lamb or beef for Wednesday's dinner.

No way Maplewood is the best farmers market. It's nice being on a Wednesday evening, but the selection is limited and the atmosphere is super yuppie. Tower Grove's is good, but I think Ferguson may be the best kept secret.

All local growers, lots of organic items (including meat and cheese), great chef demos and samples, and a wide selection in general. They also have live music and the occasional cooking contest with prize money. Good atmosphere, reasonable prices.

Ride the bike trail from Metro to get there. Two miles round trip - an interesting, peaceful ride.
