Christopher Burch's work evokes the unspeakable dread that soaks the edges of H.P. Lovecraft's finest stories. In Lovecraft's tales, men go mad when they tear through the thin tissue that separates this realm from other, alien dimensions populated by unimaginably terrible creatures. Burch strives to create "the ectoplasmic echoes existing between laughter and death," and his slick portrait of a mass of writhing, metallic tentacles tipped with leering Mr. Punch faces is the prime example of his success. Christopher Burch: The Sleep of Reason opens with a free public reception from 6 to 10 p.m. Friday, June 4, at Hoffman LaChance Contemporary (2713 Sutton Boulevard, Maplewood; 314-960-5322 or www.hoffmanlachancefineart.com). The gallery is open Thursday through Saturday, and Burch's work remains on display through Saturday, June 26.
