As the song asks, "Wouldn't you like to get away?" Well, of course you would, but you shouldn't just head down to the corner bar (where everybody knows your name); you need to get out of town — even though you're broke. Well, do you have enough gas in your tank to drive approximately 70 miles roundtrip to Highland, Illinois? Good — start driving! And why are you making the trip to this small town just a smidge northeast of St. Louis? For a Weekend Art Getaway, that's why! This event, which runs from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturday and from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday (August 5 and 6), features all kinds of free fun, including live music, kids' activities and a local-arts expo. There's even a sidewalk-chalk Street Art Festival, where artists transform the streets around Highland's historic downtown square (907 Main Street) into their canvases — and all for your enjoyment. For more information about the Weekend Art Getaway, call 618-654-3721 or visit www.highlandillinois.com. And if you happen to have $7 to $9 in your pocket when you get to Highland, stop by the Highland Upper Elementary School (1800 Lindenthal Avenue) for Hard Road Theatre Productions' performances of Grease at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday and at 2 p.m. on Sunday; visit www.hardroad.org for more about that.
