Cloaked in Darkness

Seasonal affective opera

Puccini's one-act opera Il Tabarro (The Cloak) isn't a tale of terror in the modern sense. No monsters or supernatural elements, not even a visit from Old Scratch, but it does have the sort of shocking ending that suits the Halloween season. Michele and Giorgetta are husband and wife who have grown distant from one another, much to Michele's dismay — Giorgetta is seemingly less concerned, because she has Luigi on the side. But this love triangle is unbalanced, because Luigi can't bear sharing Giorgetta. Will this tale of three dramatic personae with damaged hearts result in a death? Probably — it is an opera. The Union Avenue Opera presents Il Tabarro in concert performances at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday (October 31 and November 1) at Union Avenue Christian Church (733 North Union Boulevard; 314-361-2881 or www.unionavenueopera.org). Tickets are $30.
