Fun Before the Candle Lighting

Well, it's official: Chanukah creep is real. This year the Festival of Lights begins on December 1, but the Missouri Botanical Garden (4344 Shaw Boulevard; 314-577-5100 or www.mobot.org) gets a jump on the season a full three days early with its Chanukah: Festival of Lights from noon to 4 p.m. today. Compared to Christmas creep, that's a level of restraint unimagined by the modern retailer. So come on down and enjoy performances by the student choruses of the Reform Jewish Academy, Solomon Schechter Day School and Epstein Hebrew Academy. Shir Ami will sing traditional Jewish music, and HaShemesh offers contemporary Israeli folk music. The Garden Gate Shop will have Chanukah-themed gifts for sale, and the Silver Lady and the B'nai El Congregation Gift Shop will set up a traditional shuk for last-minute gifts. Admission is free with regular garden admission ($4 to $8).
