Garlic Is King

Alas, Saleem's, the Lebanese restaurant in the Loop where garlic reigned supreme, has closed (yeah, yeah, even though it was shuttered a while ago, we still miss its garlicky devotion). But that's not to say garlic worship is dead in this town! In fact, Jack Petrovic, the Gardenworks manager at the Schlafly Bottleworks (7260 Southwest Avenue, Maplewood; 314-241-2337 or www.schlafly.com), keeps the garlic dream alive by teaching folks about the bulb and spreading his love of the stinky stuff during "Do You Love Garlic?" This class is held today in the Crown Room at the Bottleworks, and attendees will learn not only about the varieties of garlic and how to store the bulb, but also how to grow it at home, including how to plant it and when to harvest it, thusly spreading garlic (and garlic love) all around the St. Louis area. Sounds (and smells) good to us! Plus, if weather permits, workshoppers will even get to visit the garden at the Bottleworks for a demonstration and further discussion. Admission to "Do You Love Garlic?" is free, and class is in session beginning at 10 a.m.
