Get Schooled

The back-to-school time of year was so exciting when you were elementary-school-aged. Your mom bought new crayons for your art box, you could drink out of tiny milk cartons again, and you could resume hoping that your teacher would skip the math lesson and just put on a film strip. Even though those educational movies often (if not always) featured some old-fashioned kids and their dated slang, the 16mm films were much more fun to watch than it was to read out of the health book. Or work math problems on the board. Or do just about anything else in the classroom (except play “Heads Up Seven Up,” which was awesome). Lucky for you, remembering those fun times tonight will be easy, thanks to the Missouri History Museum (Lindell Boulevard and DeBaliviere Avenue; 314-746-4599 or www.mohistory.org) and its Cine 16 Film Series, which returns with Back to School: No Hall Pass Required, a program of old-school educational movies. The evening gets going at 7 p.m., and admission is free -- but you might want to bring along some scratch for beer, soda, candy and popcorn (sorry, but milk won’t be available for purchase).
