Cinco de Mayo comes early

What happens when Cinco de Mayo falls on the most tedious day of the week (that would be Monday for the unemployed among you)? The celebrations move to the Saturday before, naturally! Along Cherokee Street (between Nebraska and Iowa avenues; www.cincodemayostl.com), a free fiesta runs from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturday, May 3, and the party includes live music from Tamborazo Mixteco, Javier Mendoza and others, plus food, drink, art and mucho fun. And at the Atomic Cowboy (4140 Manchester Avenue; 314-775-0775 or www.atomiccowboystl.com), Saturday serves as a jumping-off point for three days of parties! The first day has a beach theme with sand, swimsuits, volleyball and the tunes of El Caribe Tropical along with a few more bands; playa del Atomic opens at noon on Saturday, and you don't have to go home until 3 a.m. Then on Sunday, May 4, enjoy some salsa lessons and food specials, and on Monday, May 5 — Cinco de Mayo! — the Cowboy opens for lunch at 11 a.m., and there's a margarita happy hour to boot. After this much fun, you'll definitely be feeling all "¡Viva Mexico!" (but your liver might be screaming "¡Ay caramba!").
