It Don't Mean a Thing

COCA's crazy for swing

Feb 1, 2006 at 4:00 am
Swing dancing is one of those crazes that was almost entirely forgotten until a catchy song came along and breathed new life into it (thanks, Brian Setzer!) — sort of like what cooking shows did for television and what Martha Stewart did for ankle GPS monitoring systems. Ah, sometimes it just takes the right gimmick. So throw on your best vintage duds, and strut over to the Center of Creative Arts (524 Trinity Avenue, University City) at 7 p.m. for COCALoco: Crazy for Swing. With live music by Hudson and the Hoo Doo Cats, performances by COCAdance, dance lessons from professionals and prizes (free stay at the Westin-St. Louis, anyone?), this event is another pump of adrenaline into swing's staying power. Better still, the money raised at the party goes toward COCA's Urban Arts Program, so the organization can continue to offer free arts instruction to students in the Saint Louis Public Schools. Tickets are $40 to $50; call 314-725-6555 or check out www.cocastl.org for more information.
