O Little Town of Chesterfield

Traveling during the holidays is about as much fun as shopping this time of year. Ticket prices are high, security is tight, and the odor of feet mixed with the overpowering scent of Cinnabon at the airports is not appetizing or pleasant. So stay home, and Return to Bethlehem at Lord of Life Lutheran Church (15750 Baxter Road, Chesterfield; www.lordoflifelcms.org or 636-532-0400). OK, so it’s not the real Bethlehem, but the church re-creates the small town on the night of the first Christmas, with the help of live animals and more than 60 costumed cast members of all ages. Your stroll through the old city happens indoors, and while you’re waiting for the “streets” to clear, a variety of musical acts provides holiday entertainment in the warmth of the church’s sanctuary. Walking through Bethlehem is free, but this window to the past is limited: You can Return to Bethlehem from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday and Friday and from 2 to 8 p.m. Saturday and Sunday (December 7 to 10).
