If, as Benjamin Franklin theorized, beer is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy, George Roy Hill's film Slap Shot is proof that God also wants us to have a dirty good time while drinking. Paul Newman stars as Reggie Dunlop, the cagey player-coach of the Charlestown Chiefs, a failing hockey team. Through dirty play and an approach to fisticuffs that makes Don Cherry beam, the Chiefs become a huge draw. But at what price? Well, blood and teeth mostly, but also a little bit of the beauty of the game.
