On the Grid

A dance piece can be inspired by almost anything, really -- a social topic or issue, a personal experience or even an element of the scientific world. In the case of Abandon!, the upcoming concert of the Slaughter Project dance company, all of the aforementioned stimulate the minds and movement of the show's choreographers. There's company namesake Cecil Slaughter's Grid, which examines society's views on gender roles and an individual's ethnicity; Uprooted by Marleigh Stern, a piece that ponders the feelings involved when the past has to be left behind; and Ryadah Heiskell's Refractions, a work that utilizes hip-hop to explore the way that sound and light waves move through various media. In all, the concert features nine works, six of which are premieres, and 25 dancers, who are sure to speak volumes through their movement and make the evening more than memorable. Abandon! is presented at 8 p.m. at Washington University's Edison Theatre (6445 Forsyth Boulevard; 314-935-6543 or www.edisontheatre.wustl.edu); tickets cost $15 to $20.
