St. Louis is currently in the midst of its 250th birthday year, and a birthday party ain't nothing without music. The Chamber Music Society of St. Louis steps into the breach to provide the necessary soundtrack with its season opener, St. Louis, America. The program features a deep and varied selection of music inspired by St. Louis (Scott Joplin's Three Selections) and the American experience (Aaron Copland's Quiet City, Charles Ives' Variation on America), as well as an outsider's view (Henri Vieuxtemps' Variations on Yankee Doodle). Friend of the city Leonard Slatkin leads the Chamber Music Society of St. Louis through its paces at 7:30 p.m. Monday and Tuesday (October 13 and 14) at the Sheldon (3648 Washington Boulevard; 314-533-9900 or www.thesheldon.org).
