Put a Godspell on You

May 3, 2012 at 4:00 am
Long before The Book of Mormon hit Broadway, Godspell was enchanting audiences with its funky, fresh, lighthearted take on the Gospel of St. Matthew. Godspell sprung the now-famous show tune "Beautiful City," and thanks to a recent Broadway revival, the show is experiencing a resurgence in popularity. Throughout the two-act play the character Jesus shares the parables of the Good Samaritan, Lazarus and the Prodigal Son, and sings of compassion before ultimately meeting his fate -- a reimagined crucifixion via an electrical fence. Witness the stirring spectacle at the Family Musical Theater's production of Godspell, debuting tonight at 8 p.m. at the Ivory Theatre (7620 Michigan Avenue; 314-631-8330). Tickets range from $12 to $22. For more information, visit www.familymusical.org.
