Take Wing

All winter long the eagles fly over our rivers and eat our fish, and we trek out to try and spot them despite the chilly temperatures and the eagles' lack of interpersonal skills. (Well, has one of them ever thanked you for celebrating them? No.) But eagles aren't the only feathered friends around these parts, you know. In the summertime other birdies fly around the region, and they would like some attention, too! So venture over to Pere Marquette Lodge & Conference Center (off of Route 100 in Grafton, Illinois; 618-786-2331) for the third annual Hummingbird Festival from 1 to 4 p.m. The Illinois Audubon Society will be banding hummingbirds throughout the afternoon, so you will get to check out the little guys up close and even adopt one if your heart desires (for a small fee)! Can't you just feel the love?
