The Powell Is Alive

You might not remember that Ms. Day is a huge fan of The Sound of Music (she forgives you for forgetting, just as wonderful, beautiful Maria would). Day appreciates the nun-in-training's craftiness in creating clothing out of curtains. She adores the dual love stories, the lovely scenery and the touches of history, but most of all, Day fancies the crystal-clear singing. "Edelweiss" might be one of the prettiest tunes ever put to music by Rodgers and Hammerstein, but "So Long, Farewell," "Sixteen Going on Seventeen" and "The Lonely Goatherd" are all simply splendid, too. Of course, "My Favorite Things" might be Day's favorite, but it's hard to say which song she'll be singing the loudest at the Sing-A-Long Sound of Music extravaganza happening at 7 p.m. at Powell Symphony Hall (718 North Grand Boulevard). During this event, the symphony won't be playing but the musical film will be, with subtitles for those who haven't memorized every tune. A goodie bag is included with your ticket, priced at $20 to $45; call 314-534-1700 or visit www.slso.org to make a purchase. And note: A costume contest precedes the screening!
