Walk the Walk

Very rarely does a museum invite you to stomp all over an artist's work. But Walking in Circles, a piece in the midcareer survey Rivane Neuenschwander: A Day Like Any Other, does just that. Various-size circles of clear adhesive are painted on the floor, gradually darkening as they collect the dirt and debris from patrons' feet. Much of Neuenschwander's playful-yet-thoughtful art is dependent upon collaboration, whether with the gallery attendants who must empty and refill the water buckets of Rain Rains so that it perpetually rains in one part of the gallery, or the artist herself, who will be recorded as she sweeps one room for hidden listening devices (planted by an outside security firm) in order to create the film The Conversation. Rivane Neuenschwander: A Day Like Any Other opens with a free public reception from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, October 8, at the Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum (1 Brookings Drive; 314-935-4523 or kemperartmuseum.wustl.edu). Neuenschwander's work remains up through Monday, January 10, 2011, and the gallery is open every day except Tuesday.
