Whither the Artists?

Lifestyles of the richly creative

Artists and their lifestyles and workspaces fascinate people. All those bright, airy lofts with breathtaking views and abundant still-life fruit bowls, the nude models scattered about, and the free jazz crackling on the hi-fi — it positively reeks of creation. The City-Wide Open Studios tours allow you to enter the rarefied air of more than 100 working-artists' studios for two days (Saturday and Sunday, July 19 and 20). If you're interested in which studios are open to tourists and where these studios are, you should attend the Open Studios Preview Party from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 15, at the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis (3750 Washington Boulevard; 314-535-4660 or www.contemporarystl.org). An exhibition of work by participating artists is on display, and you can pick up a map highlighting the open studios. Admission is free.
