Wish Upon A Star

San Francisco video artist Bryan Boyce takes advantage of the "fair use" doctrine to play with the characters of staunch copyright defender the Walt Disney company in his unexpectedly effective video, Walt Disney Taxi Driver. Boyce's version of Martin Scorsese’s critically acclaimed vigilante drama features a Mickey Mouse-obsessed Travis Bickle who sees Disney characters everywhere in seedy Manhattan. That simple change alters how you perceive Bickle and his fascination with cleaning the filth out of the city, and it also pokes fun at the now-sanitized Times Square. Walt Disney Taxi Driver is part of the exhibition Exposure 16: Primal Forms, which opens with a free public reception from 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday, August 24, at Gallery 210 on the University of Missouri-St. Louis campus (1 University Boulevard at Natural Bridge Road; 314-516-5976 or www.gallery210.umsl.com). The gallery is open Tuesday through Saturday, and the show remains up through Saturday, October 5.
Tuesdays-Saturdays. Starts: Aug. 24. Continues through Oct. 5, 2013
