The perfect accompaniment to a Five Star Burgers (8125 Maryland Avenue; 314-720-4350) patty is a nice milkshake. And why not make it boozy? The Clayton restaurant has four adult milkshakes to choose from, and bartender Mandy Ashley recommended the German chocolate shake.

The frozen concoction began with a general manager experimenting with ice cream and liquor. Ashley has an easier explanation.

"I suppose that they started because alcohol and ice cream are probably two of most adults' favorite things," she says. "Why not put them together?"

The German chocolate gets its alcohol content from Malibu rum, known for its coconut taste, and Godiva Chocolate liqueur.

"With the creamy Godiva chocolate liqueur that goes into it, I think it helps the consistency just be extra creamy and delightful," Ashley says.

Five Star uses local ice cream-maker Serendipity's (8130 Big Bend Boulevard, Webster Groves; 314-962-2700) vanilla ice cream as a base for their shakes.

"Becky [Jacobs] is in charge of it, and she really does amazing things," Ashley says about Serendipity. Ashley kept going on about the merits of the Webster Groves shop.

"Flavor, number one," she says. "Seriously, it's the best ice cream ever. The texture is really smooth and creamy. I do think that helps a lot."

The frozen alcohol drink experience is a rare event, and being able to imbibe with your ice cream is always appreciated -- they're a big hit with customers.

"They sell really well," Ashley says. "It doesn't matter if it's dessert. We have a lot of people come in to just get those, and nothing else. We have people drink them before dinner."
