Make ours a beer...

The Scene: Square One Brewery & Distillery is housed in an old Anheuser-Busch tavern, and the vibe smacks of a dark, medieval haunt where a wench might serve you mead from a cask. But with its modern take on pub food and tasty taps, there's nothing dusty, musty or even wenchy about the place. In fact, Square One is forward-looking in all phases of the business, including a commitment to be greener by buying locally and reducing waste.

All of the house brews boast complex flavor profiles, particularly the (seasonal) Maple Stout, which layers sweet, woodsy flavors with hints of mocha. A highlight of the happy-hour app menu is the "Trio of Dips," which features roasted-garlic hummus, spicy black-bean dip and an edamame spread -- all of 'em distinctively seasoned and delicious.

Why You'll Go Back: You like beer.

The Verdict: There's an unassuming coolness to Square One, part of which is due to its Lafayette Square environs. But the good food and beer, the smooth and down-to-earth staff (and the earth-friendly dedication) give the joint its own special vibe, one you'll be happy to be a part of.
