Rodeo Soul with Boyracer

Constantly spitting out albums, singles, 10-inch EPs, split singles, flexi-discs, compilation tracks, one-sided live LPs and more, Boyracer, straight outta Leeds, U.K., charted a ridiculously prolific course through the indie-pop underground of the early- to mid-'90s before fizzling out after a disastrous stint on trust-fund indie label Zero Hour. Reforming as a lark for a one-off show last fall, the band, with some new and some old members, has apparently decided to make another go of it, embarking on a several-month tour and releasing a "best bits" compilation CD called Boyfuckingracer on leader Stewart Anderson's own 555 Records. The new lineup has yet to release any new recordings, but we can assume that the classic Boyracer sound will be in evidence when the band blows through Frederick's this Friday, opening for St. Louis' own Rodeo Soul (pictured).Although occasionally dismissed as a Wedding Present knockoff, the tag only holds up when a Boyracer two-minute Buzzcocksish punky-pop tune is compared with a Wedding Present two-minute Buzzcocksish punky-pop tune. Boyracer was always just as likely to bust out a weird dance groove or dub track to spice things up. One of the more underrated bands during indie pop's mid-'90s heyday, Boyracer never made it quite as big as it probably should have, especially here in the Midwest.

When Boyracer played St. Louis five years ago, the show was fast-paced, funny, sloppy drunk and fantastic. Add a hint of twang, and the same can usually be said of Rodeo Soul.
