10 Ugly St. Louis Dogs You Can and Should Adopt Today

Meet Hendricks

Hendricks isn’t ugly, just cute and lucky! He is currently in a foster home with CARE STL and his adoption fee is listed as $0. He is a big softie who weighs 60 pounds and is approximately two years and nine months old. His foster mom says he loves to snuggle, takes treats gently, knows how to sit on command, and walks well on his leash. He was first taken in by the shelter on November 18, 2022, and is ready for forever.

Meet Cordova

Cordova and her massive tongue are ready to come into your home to give you plenty of puppy kisses! According to CARE STL she is kid- and people-friendly and may be integrated into a home with other dogs. She is 50 pounds, free to adopt and currently living in a foster home. 

“She's still a young girly and likes to be active. She is surprisingly quiet in a home and doesn't seem to be much of a barker. Cordova would appreciate a home where she can be around people a lot and get plenty of play time. She is eager to please and would love to learn more basic training skills,” according to CARE STL. 

Meet Grammy

Grammy looks like she’s up for spending a day watching cartoons on the couch with you while you take an edible, smoke a fat one, or do whatever it is RFT readers do with their weekends. She is a spayed brown and white pitbull terrier mix who is estimated to be one year and seven months old. She has been at Humane Society of Missouri -St. Louis City since Feb 8, 2024, and may be Baxter’s smoking buddy.

Meet Anteater

A cat may have gotten Anteater’s tongue, but that won’t stop him from giving you kisses! He just turned one, weighs 45 pounds and has a $0 adoption fee, according to CARE STL. According to CARE he “loves other dogs and cats, does not like caged rodents, but doesn't mind reptiles, he has a quiet bark that he doesn't even use often, LOVES cuddling and being affectionate, playing outside, and going on walks.”

Meet Kash

Kash may not know what’s going on at any given time, but he’s happy about it. He is neutered, weighs 66 lbs, and shelter staff estimate that he is about three years old. In dog years, this means he’s old enough to sit next to you while you crack open a cold one. 

The Humane Society of Missouri says he is a red and white pit bull terrier who appears to be mixed with an American Bulldog — so expect drool and couch potato cuddles. Kash has been at the Humane Society of Missouri - Maryland Heights since Feb 18, 2024, and is looking for a drinking buddy to take him home.

Meet Baxter

Baxter has the soul of a stoner and the fashion sense of an icon (just look at that bow tie!). He is a neutered black and white terrier mix and his expressive ears make up for any 1,000 yard stare he could give you. Shelter staff estimate Baxter is still a puppy at 6 months old and he weighs just over 33 pounds. He has lived at the Humane Society of Missouri -St. Louis City since Jan 31, 2024 and is looking for a forever home.

Meet Wilma

Wilma with CARE STL is the most loveable mop you’ll ever meet! She is free to adopt and estimated to be three years old. She weighs 32 pounds and was taken into the shelter earlier this month. 

Meet Merlin

Merlin has the same face we make whenever Josh Hawley opens his mouth. Despite the perpetual RBF, he is described as gentle, friendly, affectionate, playful and a dog who loves kisses, according to the St. Louis Senior Dog Project. He is a 7-year-old Shih Tzu who gets along with other dogs and cats, according to the organization.

Meet Johnny Cash

Johnny Cash is a 3-year-old Chihuahua mix who was rescued from a hoarding situation and is looking for his forever home while coping with anxiety and trauma. He has “a face only a parent could love,” according to the St. Louis Senior Dog Project. He is described as nervous, shy, and kind and the organization asks that he go to a home with at least one other dog to help him come out of his shell.

“This Country Boy would love more than anything to find the June to his Johnny!!” The non-profit said in a Facebook post. “We know that, despite his Worried Man Blues, the perfect person is out there and will love him *because* of his quirks.”

Meet Sunny

Sunny is a newbie to the St. Louis Senior Dog Project, and is described as a “fluffernutter” who is 10-years-old and spent his entire life in a breeding facility. There is a mass on his leg that may be cancer and he is looking for a home while he recovers. The organization says he is happy go-lucky and is learning confidence and how to run around and bark by watching other dogs. 

Meet Risa

Risa may not be a dog, but she is definitely plotting your demise and the overthrow of the government. Her name is Risa (of no relation to TikTok’s Reesa Teesa!) and she’s a spry 10 years old. She weighs about 6 pounds and her adoption fee is $50 with CARE STL.
