BandTogether: Music of John Williams

Picture in your mind Elliott and E.T.'s BMX bicycle flight, or Luke Skywalker's blistering Death Star trench run, or even Lois Lane's glide over the Metropolis skies in Superman's arms. Do you hear music? That's the magic of composer John Williams. Williams began his career under the tutelage of Hollywood's greatest golden age composers, including Franz Waxman, Bernard Herrmann and Alfred Newman. During the past six decades, he's written some of the most memorable film music of all time. It's impossible to think of films such as Jurassic Park or the Harry Potter trilogy without hearing Williams' iconic scores. Tonight at 8 p.m. St Louis' preeminent LGBT, all-volunteer community band, BandTogether, celebrates its seventeenth anniversary with "The Music of John Williams" at the 560 Music Center (560 Trinity Avenue, University City; www.bandtogetherstl.com). Williams has been nominated for 49 Academy Awards and 63 Grammy Awards to date, so the group has an immense catalog of songs to pull from. Admission to the show is free, but donations are gratefully accepted at the door.
