A gravestone attempts to summarize a person's entire existence simply by listing birth and death dates, and while these tidbits can place someone in the context of history, they certainly don't scratch the surface when it comes to providing any details about an individual's importance to friends, family and society at large. Through her book Movers and Shakers, Scalawags and Suffragettes: Tales from Bellefontaine Cemetery, Carol Ferring Shepley has given a voice to some of the 87,000 St. Louisans who are buried in one of our city's most storied resting spots. Through her research she uncovered information about fur traders, Civil War fighters, important doctors and more, and details about these folks and others at Bellefontaine — like William Clark, the Lemps and William S.
