In June 1969, a homophobia-driven police raid on a Greenwich Village bar provoked immediate and violent uprisings. The Stonewall Riots, as they came to be known, marked a watershed moment for GLBT Americans. Unwilling to accept constant alienation and persecution, gay activists raised their voices for civil rights. The Gateway Men's Chorus commemorates this historic time in Remembering Stonewall. With gay-rights issues at the fore of many national debates and PrideFest beginning next weekend, now is the perfect time for a musical refresher course. Remembering Stonewall features Greg Gilpin's "Above the Walls" (commissioned by the GMC) and a revised and rescored version of Roger Bourland's "Flashpoint: Stonewall," as well as a selection of Judy Garland songs. The GMC performs Remembering Stonewall Friday and Saturday (June 19 and 20) at 8 p.m. at the Edison Theatre (6445 Forsyth Boulevard, on the campus of Washington University). Tickets are $23 to $50.
